Art Historian, and Writer

Caterina Bellinetti

Caterina holds a PhD in art history from the University of Glasgow and a Master in Chinese Studies from the University of Edinburgh. She has been studying Chinese art, culture, and history for twenty years. She is particularly interested in the intersection between politics and art as well as the evolution of art themes and symbolism across the centuries.

As a researcher, she focuses on visual propaganda and photography in modern and contemporary China. She has lectured for the V&A in London and the University of Malta, and presented her research at The British Museum, the University of Oxford, and the University of Leeds.
As a writer, she has interviewed artists such as George Petrides, Pixy Liao, Maggie Steber, and Marco Almaviva. She has collaborated with the Chinese-Dutch photographer Xiaoxiao Xu to write essays for her projects Watering My Horse by a Spring at the Foot of the Long Wall (2020) and Shooting the Tiger (2022).

She is the proud owner of a series of temperamental film cameras—including a c.1920 Kodak Vest Pocket Autographic. Her favourite artists are Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899), Robert Doisneau (1912-1994), and Hung Liu (1948-2021). She lives in Edinburgh, UK
